Judith Burrows

Judith Burrows’ film and photography background plays a                   significant role in her mixed media images. Her interest is in the unique resonance of a particular location, how we individually relate to our surroundings, and the narratives we weave into it. In her  commissioned work Judith explores a specific area to find relevant locations for her portraiture and takes photographs as reference   using several cameras, and old film stock.  The resulting photographs when processed show a variety of dialogue. Some images spark memories and become the inspiration for further exploration. By overlapping negatives in repetitive layout and composition, and intensifying the particularities of light and graphic elements, the    relevance and emotional intent of a particular location is unraveled. Worked over with gouache, oils, abstract mono-printed textures and text the images generate out from the confinements of the large stretched   canvasses. The multiple layers and textures, and color over Black and White, seem to challenge concepts of time and  memory. There is a combined sense of age and agelessness, and of perhaps nostalgia in the embedded episodes, played out like a series of film stills in vast dystopian landscapes. This feeling is exaggerated by the presence of small lone figures that appear lost or awkward.   The result is a multitude of dramatic narratives in one single image.
